Sometimes a short sentence captures something you know all too well. Everything is under control — in theory. Something is accurate, but not particularly useful. An explanation helps, just not quite as much as you hoped.
Those small gaps between expectations and experience often give us a starting point. There’s room in them for humour, illustration, and your own associations.
Everyday observations, a few words
We draw on questions we keep coming back to, our own reactions, and the language we use to make sense of everyday life. Sometimes that language is technical: precise, economical, and built for clear answers. Applied to feelings or relationships, it takes on a different meaning.
“Clarity helps. Sometimes” captures that kind of humour. A reasonable statement, followed by a small qualification. It might remind you of a particular situation, or simply make you smile.
We like designs that leave that choice to you.
When an idea makes it into a collection
An idea can amuse or interest us at first and still lose its appeal a few days later. We give ourselves time to experiment, make changes, and put a design aside. When we return to it, we ask whether we would still want to wear it.
How it works on a shirt matters too: the arrangement of the words, the size of an illustration, the colours, and the space around them. An interesting phrase is only the beginning.
We use a range of tools along the way, but we make the decisions about direction and the finished design ourselves. A motif’s current popularity is never enough on its own to earn it a place in a collection.
Different moods, a shared approach
Soft Conclusions centres on short phrases and dry humour. Its observations can feel familiar even when you can’t immediately explain why.
Signals from Within gives more room to illustration, mood, and things that are difficult to put into a single sentence.
Each collection has its own character. What connects them is our taste and a desire to make things we would reach for ourselves.
An idea needs a good shirt
A print may catch your eye, but how the shirt feels and wears matters too. We use Stanley/Stella organic cotton tees and wear the pieces we’ve ordered ourselves.
Stanley/Stella makes the garments; we develop the print designs. Each design is printed after an order is placed, helping us limit stock of finished printed shirts.
We want the shirt to be as enjoyable to wear as the design is to look at.
Something that feels like you
You might recognise your own way of thinking in a phrase. You might be drawn to an illustration or a combination of colours. Each is a good reason to choose a shirt.
If you enjoy short phrases and understated humour, explore Soft Conclusions. If you’re drawn to imagery and mood, take a look at Signals from Within.
